Today I’ll be looking at my top 3 ways to create a website and earn money from it. This is not a ‘get rich quick’ post (as none of my posts ever will be unless I find a legit way to do so) but if you employ any (or all) of these methods with some time and effort, you will earn money from your website.
The main idea of making money online is that you need to offer value for your guests. Whether it’s needed information, a good laugh, or an actual product that you sell it’s all about VALUE. No one will buy from you if you’re not offering anything for their time. In fact, your visitors will ‘bounce’ (click on one page of your site and then immediately leave) more often than not, so no matter which of these you hope to make work for you, if you offer nothing you will get nothing. Just keep that in mind.
(If you need information on web builders vs hosting, please check this article to see which you would feel more comfortable with while building your site.)
Money Making Idea #1: Product Sales
This is a great one for creators but you can also do a direct marketing site with a number of different companies that will be happy to have you sell for them.
Honestly, this isn’t my favorite because you have to deal with actual physical products, customer service, shipping, etc. I would much rather leave all that to someone else. However, if that is your thing and you want to tackle owning an actual ‘online storefront’ then this is the one for you.
A few of the programs on offer for your actual storefront are:
- Build your own ecommerce website
And these are only a fraction of the ways to open a storefront on the web.
As for the direct marketing, I’m sure you know plenty of these common names and brands:
- Young Living
- Pampered Chef
And, again, that’s a tiny fraction of the direct sales companies you could sell for. There are literal directories online where you can find companies offering products for anyone living any kind of lifestyle. Some may even handle the customer service and shipping for you, so be sure to check all of their FAQ’s and policies.
Many of these companies require you to ‘buy in’ though, so you may need to offer up some collateral in order to begin. Most of these are under $300 though, so if you’re interested just be aware. However, these brands already have exposure and traffic associated with their name so you may get a bit more interest from your customers this way.
Also, it’s a good segway into having a ‘real life’ business as well as online as you can always sell in your community as well. Just be sure to check with your local government regarding sales tax and if you need any licensing to do direct marketing in your area.
Money Making Idea #2: Offer A Service
This idea is very similar to idea #1 but instead of a tangible product you’re selling a skill that you possess. I know a few people who offer music lessons online either through Skype or an actual listing site (or app) like Fiverr.
I know what you’re thinking, “If I use a listing app why would I need a site?”
People are looking for information on why they should choose YOU over anyone else. Many of these sites offer little in the way of credentialing, experience, etc. To build your value to those who would buy your services you need to sell yourself to them. Build a social presence: have a Facebook page for your business, Instagram, Twitter and post YouTube videos of you performing your chosen skill.
You need to become the expert your guests look to when they need your specific services. It’s all about Value.
Money Making Idea #3: Affiliate Marketing
This one is near and dear to my heart since it is what I do. You don’t have to deal with products or customer service (for the most part) and you basically use your website as an information hub on whatever unique niche interests you.
It does take time and effort (like any of these ideas) and a lot of research as well as writing, but it’s definitely a great option if you want something that, once established, will keep producing income even if you take a break for a little while.
Granted just like the above ideas it’s a great idea to create a more complete online social identity as well but there are plenty of affiliate marketers who just concentrate on websites, maintaining a sort of anonymous ‘corporate’ feel to their sites.
Personally, I like being a little more casual and personal. I feel like it adds to my credibility because you can figure out pretty quick that I’m just one human being writing articles and trying to make this ‘online’ thing work, just like you.
As for companies looking to pay you for using their links, much like direct marketing companies, your choices are endless. And, again, there are directories dedicated to affiliate programs. How you choose is based on your niche and the level of your traffic, since some affiliate programs are for established sites with a ton of traffic but there are plenty for beginners as well!
The best thing to do with Affiliate links is to write an article and every company you mention, just see if they have an affiliate program. Most do. If you apply and are denied it’s not a big deal; just reapply once you have the traffic to support it. You’ll be surprised at how many programs are just a simple sign up to get your link.
As a final thought I would like to say that this is not a definitive list of ways to create a website and earn money from it. They are just my top 3 and the ones I have tried myself so i know there’s potential there.
In reality, you have to judge what your capabilities are and how much time and effort you are willing to put into your chosen project, or projects. Ultimately, you can do one or all of these with great results.
I hope you found my article to be informative and have given you ideas on how to use a website to earn income, now it’s up to you to make your dream a reality!
